If you’re tired of receiving spam on your phone, you’re not alone. According to research firm RoboKiller, the United States received nearly 12 billion spam and scam text messages in May alone, or about 43 for every person in the country. Fortunately, Apple now hopes to help combat the influx with a new reporting feature on the upcoming iOS 16.
Launched for the beta version of the operating system, the new feature allows iPhone users to report spam SMS messages directly to Apple as well as the user’s service provider, who will then investigate and report the number for future spam prevention. The feature was previously available in older generations of iOS but only worked with iMessages, so it will be useful to increase the coverage of SMS messages. Notably, however, reporting the number will not automatically mean that you will no longer receive messages from them, so you will still need to block the number manually on your device if you want to be sure.
Unfortunately, there is no official release date for iOS 16 yet, but Apple is expected to roll out the update this fall.
Elsewhere in the tech world, Twitter is introducing longer content with a feature called Notes.
