Boris Johnson doesn’t deny offering Carrie Symonds top job

Votes are being counted in two by-elections triggered by the resignations of disgraced Tory MPs.

At 10pm last night polling stations closed for the by-elections in Wakefield and Tiverton & Honiton.

Turnout in the Wakefield by-election was 39.09%, while 52.3% of voters in Tiverton and Honiton cast their ballots.

In Wakefield, the by-election was called when Imran Ahmad Khan resigned as MP last month after being found guilty of sexually assaulting a 15-year-old boy at a party in 2008.

Also in May, Neil Parish quit as MP for Tiverton & Honiton after admitting to watching pornography on his phone in the House of Commons on two separate occasions.

Prime Minister Boris Johnson said earlier he was “full of optimism and drive” ahead of the results.

Speaking to broadcasters in the Rwandan capital, Kigali, he said: “I will watch the results with interest but still full of optimism and momentum, but most seasoned political observers know that the midterm by-elections are never necessarily easy for anyone. government.”

Wakefield turnout down 25% from 2019 general election

Turnout in the Wakefield by-election was 39.09%, Wakefield council said.

Some 27,205 verified ballots were cast out of a total electorate of 69,601.

The turnout in the 2019 general election was 64.15%.
