Boris Johnson doesn’t deny offering Carrie Symonds top job
Votes are being counted in two by-elections triggered by the resignations of disgraced Tory MPs.
At 10pm last night polling stations closed for the by-elections in Wakefield and Tiverton & Honiton.
Turnout in the Wakefield by-election was 39.09%, while 52.3% of voters in Tiverton and Honiton cast their ballots.
In Wakefield, the by-election was called when Imran Ahmad Khan resigned as MP last month after being found guilty of sexually assaulting a 15-year-old boy at a party in 2008.
Also in May, Neil Parish quit as MP for Tiverton & Honiton after admitting to watching pornography on his phone in the House of Commons on two separate occasions.
Prime Minister Boris Johnson said earlier he was “full of optimism and drive” ahead of the results.
Speaking to broadcasters in the Rwandan capital, Kigali, he said: “I will watch the results with interest but still full of optimism and momentum, but most seasoned political observers know that the midterm by-elections are never necessarily easy for anyone. government.”

Lib Dem leader Ed Davey has hinted his party could be set for a historic by-election victory in Tiverton and Honiton.
He cryptically tweeted, “Looks like I’m gonna need a bigger hammer.”

Vote counting is now underway in the Tiverton and Honiton by-elections, officials confirmed.
The counters have spent the last three hours checking the ballots and are now moving on to counting them.
In Wakefield, the media room was told a result is expected around 4am.

Case says he’s had discussions about Carrie Johnson’s roles
Simon Case admitted he had ‘an informal conversation’ with the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge’s charity about potential ‘opportunities’ for Boris Johnson’s wife Carrie.
The Cabinet Secretary revealed that in 2020 he was prompted by a former No 10 team member to apply to the Royal Foundation for an Earthshot Prize position for Mr Johnson’s then-fiancé.
But Mr Case – who has close ties to the Duke of Cambridge, being his former private secretary – insisted he had not approved her for any paid work.

Turnout figures for the Tiverton and Honiton by-elections are due shortly and vote verification is expected to be completed shortly.
Turnout is expected to be over 52%, according to the Mid Devon council.
Things are looking positive for the Liberal Democrats, with their Treasury spokeswoman Christine Jardine MP saying there are “some good signs” in Tiverton.

Wakefield turnout down 25% from 2019 general election
Turnout in the Wakefield by-election was 39.09%, Wakefield council said.
Some 27,205 verified ballots were cast out of a total electorate of 69,601.
The turnout in the 2019 general election was 64.15%.
