India’s men’s 4x400m relay team advanced to the Commonwealth Games final after finishing second in their qualifying race here on Friday.
The Indian quartet of Muhammed Anas Yahiya, Noah Nirmal Tom, Mohammed Ajmal and Amoj Jacob took the automatic qualifying route, clocking 3:06.97s to finish second behind Kenya in round 2. India was fourth going into the last corner but Amoj passed two riders. down the home stretch to finish second. He suffered a hamstring injury while running the 4x400m relay as part of the Indian quartet at the National Interstate Championships in Chennai last month.
India finished sixth overall in both runs, with Botswana 3:05.11s being the fastest. The final will take place on Sunday. In the women’s 100m hurdles, national record holder Jyothi Yarraji crashed out in the first-round heats with a subpar performance. She clocked 13.18m to finish fourth in round 2 and 10th overall. She holds the national record of 13.04s. The heat races were held in windy conditions and Yarraji raced with a tailwind of 2m/s. All the competitors raced with a tailwind of 2 m/s or more.
Yarraji, 22, has improved his national record three times this season.
Ancy Sojan also failed to qualify for the women’s long jump final. She was ranked 13th overall in the qualifying round with a best jump of 6.25m, which was wind assisted (tailwind 2.3m/s).
Those who hit 6.75m or at least 12 best players from both groups qualify for the final. Sojan, 21, who has one season and a personal best 6.55m, finished seventh in the Group A qualifying round.
