Rory McIlroy continues to heat up and takes the lead in Travelers Championship, battling fatigue and illness – Golf Channel OCN News

CROMWELL Conn. – Nothing seems to be stopping Rory McIlroy these days.

Despite struggling with sinus issues while making his fourth straight start, McIlroy finds himself in contention again after shooting an 8-under 62 with no bogey to take the lead in the Travelers Championship.

“I didn’t hit any golf balls on Monday and Tuesday,” McIlroy said after his game. “I went back to Florida for a day, spent the night in my own bed, came back on Tuesday, didn’t come to the course, and yesterday playing the pro-am in the rain wasn’t really good preparation, but I feel – I played well at Brookline. I’m not going to lose it in two days. I knew my game was good.

McIlroy has moved up to second in the world rankings – his best ranking in two years – thanks to his last six starts, including a second at the Masters, fifth at the Wells Fargo Championship, eighth at the PGA Championship, T -18 at the Memorial, a victory at the RBC Canadian Open and a T-5 last week at the US Open.

Travelers Championship Complete Scores

After a month of golf and after the sport’s toughest test – the US Open – McIlroy felt the TPC River Highlands was the perfect place to end his hot streak before putting his clubs aside for a while. .

“It’s like rehab from the US Open coming here,” he said. “You’re like, ‘Oh, I can actually make a few birdies. That’s nice.’ I like coming here the week after the US Open, it kind of gives you an opportunity to shoot low scores and get away with it, and that’s good.

The Northern Irishman finished the day tied for the lead with JT Poston, who shot 62 in the afternoon. Xander Schauele and Martin Laird are a 7-under fullback. Patrick Cantlay is in a 6-under group.

McIlroy is under bad weather because his daughter, Poppy, “brought something home from daycare last week.” With three more rounds to go at TPC River Highlands, he will go all the way and give his best as he tries to add a 22nd PGA Tour victory to his resume before some time off.

“I think at this point it’s fair – the energy levels are okay,” he said. “I have three rounds left until I have a few weeks off and prepare for the Open Championship. I’m going to put everything into those three rounds.
